October 27, 2007 1st Annual Shop With A Cop ® For Winter Clothing
Many of our local children go without proper clothing during the winter months; many will show up to school without even a coat.
This prompted the members of the Idaho Falls FOP Lodge #6 to implement an annual Shop With A Cop for Winter Clothing. Previous Shop With A Cop programs involved taking children shopping for Christmas presents for their family. Around Fall of 2007 the Idaho Falls FOP got together with the local school district and families to help families stay warm this winter. The Idaho Falls FOP worked with teachers and counselors in Idaho Falls School District #91 to find families with children in need of winter clothing. With the help of many local and regional corporations, small businesses and individuals we were able to provide winter clothing for over 30 local elementary school children. We were able to raise up to $300 per child for winter clothing including a winter coat, 2 pairs of pants, 2 shirts/sweaters, underwear, socks, winter boots/shoes, winter hat, and gloves. We were able to raise enough money that we also allowed each child to pick out a toy for themselves.
On October 27th the day started out with breakfast at the Church of the Nazarene in Idaho Falls…and from here we headed over to the store to go shopping. The children who have often seen the police in negative situations (such as seeing a parent arrested) got to have breakfast with a police officer and ride in a police car. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to be around good role models and realize that cops aren’t much different than them.
The Idaho Falls FOP would like to thank the many local and regional sponsors who made this program happen. We plan on making the Shop With A Cop for Winter Clothing an annual event. If you or your company would like to donate to with the Shop With A Cop for Winter Clothing program in 2008, please contact Ryan Nelson with the Idaho Falls FOP by e-mail at ryan@idahofallsfop.com.
October 5, 2007 1st Annual Policeman's Ball The 1st Annual Policeman's Ball was held at the Red Lion Hotel in Idaho Falls. The event was a fundraising campaign to raise money for the proposed Family Justice Center in Idaho Falls, ID. The Family Justice Center will help to rebuild the lives of families that have been affected by domestic violence. The Family Justice Center is a project headed by the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Intervention Center in Idaho Falls (Formerly the Domestic Violence Intervention Center). Money raised will also help support the Police Officer's Disability Fund, a new program through the Idaho Falls FOP to be able to help local police officer's in need. We appreciate all of the local political leaders, businesses, community members and law enforcement who supported this event and we plan on continuing the Policeman's Ball for years to come. If you or your company would like to donate to the Family Justice Center, Teena McBride with the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Intervention Center at 529-4352. October 2007 Idaho Falls FOP partnered with Mountain View Hospital in fundraising effort for the Idaho Meth Project. Members of the Idaho Falls FOP sold donuts to raise money for this crucial project. Idaho has been reported as the #3 highest meth use in the nation. On January 22, 2008, a press release from the Idaho Meth Project states that, "The Idaho Meth Project today released the results of a first-ever statewide survey examining the attitudes and behaviors that Idaho teens, young adults, and parents have toward methamphetamine. The survey, conducted among representative groups across the state, found that 45% of young adults report Meth is readily available and 30% report having been offered the drug." Statewide Data Shows One Quarter of Young People See Benefit in Using Meth. Meth use in Idaho is The Idaho Meth Project is a large-scale prevention program aimed at significantly reducing first-time meth use through public service messaging, public policy and community outreach. The Montana Meth Project had significant positive results with their campaign and we're hoping similar good things will happen here too.
